Abstract

The present study examined the role of worry specificity in anxiety and cognitive appraisals. In study 1, self-report questionnaires tapping worry, anxiety, and cognitive appraisals (e.g., negativity of threat, uncontrollability of worry, and coping ability to threat) were administered to 250 college students. The participants with low worry specificity showed significantly higher levels of pathological worry and anxiety symptoms, and they showed significantly higher scores in perceived negativity of threat and uncontrollability of worry than those with high worry specificity. In study 2, the effects of worry specificity training were investigated. Nineteen high-worriers were randomly assigned to either worry specifying training or coping specifying training. Worry specifying training resulted in significant decreases in pathological worry, anxiety symptoms and perceived negativity of threat, while coping specifying training showed significant decrease in uncontrollability of worry. These findings demonstrated that reduced specificity of worry is related to anxiety and cognitive appraisals, and that specificity training of worry can alleviate pathological worry, anxiety, and cognitive appraisal biases. The implications and limitations of the study were discussed.
